Monty

I’m looking up at Dizzy, wild purple hair framing her face like a swirling halo, the stone Zeke wove through it tapping me lightly on the chest. Behind her, there’s an even more chaotic explosion of items than was originally on the desk, some of them actively smoking and smoldering, others simply displaced. Or enormous. Or a combination of those things. Most notably, a giant, smoldering sword whose point is thrust directly where my chest just was. The chest whose heart is now pounding in an adrenaline-fueled frenzy just a few seconds late to the show. Holy shit, did Dizzy just save my life?

And was that a fireball? Where the hell did that come from?

Zeke is clapping, but I’m frozen stock-still by my inability to process whatever just went down. And also by the feel of Dizzy’s warm body laying across mine, because believe me, it’s a stunning addition to this sudden and unexpected turn of events. She and I haven’t really gotten a chance to… connect… the way the others have, and I’ve been happy that they’ve all found something with the woman who’s apparently soulmate to all of us, but I’ve wondered if maybe I’d missed my window of opportunity somehow. Or maybe this is it?

“Monty, you okay? Did I hurt you?” She pushes both hands against my chest to sit up, causing her to straddle my crotch with her legs tucked backwards, knees digging into each of my sides. Her plump bottom lip tucks into her mouth, an expression of worry that only brings attention to the juicy bit of flesh. Well if that ain’t a gorgeous sight I don’t know what is.

“What?” I replay her question in my head until I’m able to actually process it. “No, I’m fine.” Pushing up with one hand on the ground behind me, I place the other on the small of her back to steady her as I sit up too, both legs sticking straight out between hers. “Did you just save my life?”

She winces and tucks her head down, peering upwards at me reluctantly. “More like I think I almost just killed you, really.”

“That’s not what I asked, though. Did. You. Save. My life?”

“Umm… technically? Maybe? It depends on how you…” I cut her off by jerking my hand on her back closer, crashing her front tight up against my chest. I cradle the back of her head with my other hand, lifting her lips to mine in a firm but quick kiss.

“My hero,” I croon. She gasps as I smile broadly, likely not expecting that response. Her golden eyes are wide, but she doesn’t look pissed, which is a relief since it’s not like I asked permission or we have an established thing already. If anything, the way the corners of her open mouth start to tilt up tell me she’s glad I took that leap. I can see words forming in her throat, so I pull a dirty trick and go in for more.

This time, she’s not nearly as surprised, returning the kiss eagerly.
